Anorexia Bulimia: Why Are American Teens Starving Themselves? Dina Males Mr. James Wieber English 111 Image is very crucial for a teenager; the pressure of school and fitting in with there classmates and friends can be very difficult for a teenager. It is when a teenager starts taking image to the extreme and starts harming themselves by starving themselves. More and more teenagers are becoming anorexic and bulimic and it is not only affecting girls but boys are starting to come out and say they have an eating disorder. Anorexia and bulimia is a disorder that can not be taken lightly and needs to have more focus and the dangers to be taught to youth. Anorexia and bulimia sometimes are thought of as the same, they are not.†¦show more content†¦Some of the immediate physical complaints include constantly feeling cold, bloodshot eyes with dark circles, finger calluses, dizziness, weakness, lackluster hair, moodiness, insomnia, no menstruation, swollen glands, weight loss, sore throat, or dry skin. Some of the long-term effects include extreme weight loss, gastrointestinal pain , diarrhea and/or constipation, malnutrition, loss of tooth enamel, metabolism disruption, heart attack, electrolyte imbalance, and permanent damage to internal organs, kidney failure, and death. Even through all these threats and harmful things that this disorder can cause teens and young adults they would rather look like the super model in the magazine and on T.V. their health is not a concern just the way they think they need to look. People with eating disorders often do not recognize or admit that they are ill. There are different treatment options for someone who has symptoms or has the disorder can do to seek treatment and get better. There are treatment centers that people who suffer with this disorder can seek help. When approaching someone with the disorder you have to approach in the right way or you will offend them and maybe cause more trouble. The most important is treatment is almost always needed. There are treatment centers that someone with this disorder can stay at all over the country. Many teens have to stay at these centers un til they are at a healthy weight again.
